About Us

Cloak

Cloak is a software that protects creative content from ingestion by AI models. With our patent-pending protection software, documents are unreadable to most AI models, but still visible to humans in the same manner. For artists, that means we can now send out our scripts and books while having faith that our content is resistant to AI analysis, scraping, and training.

The human voice is one of the last great gifts that mankind has to offer the world. There is a creative spirit within each of us that cannot be simply automated away. We should stop at nothing to protect it.

Our Story

Like most of us, I got into writing because I thought I had something I wanted the world to hear. I started with fictional short stories and short scripts, and slowly worked my way up to a full length novel. I fell in love with writing because the creative process is a damn hard one. It isn’t traditionally ‘fun’ and it isn’t exciting, it’s just something that feels like a need. When you’re in that state where the world around you disappears and all you can think about is the world you are creating, there is a feeling there that is unparalleled in this world.

LLMs are trying to commodify that. LLMs are trying to commodify something that humanity doesn’t attempt to produce as a commodity. And they are taking our work to do it.

I finished the first draft of my book almost a year and a half ago. And when I started sharing it with literary agents, it felt like releasing something into a void. I didn’t know where it was going, who was passing it around, what training set it might show up in, and sometimes I’d get AI generated notes back from literary agents. When news of the Bartz V. Anthropic case started surfacing, I decided to stop sending out my work. Many of my friends did the same.

After a few months, using some previous research I had done on encryption technology, I developed an algorithm that could protect my work against AI ingestion. I started sending out my book again, and began sharing the algorithm with others. The software took off fairly quickly and after a year of development, it is stronger than ever. It’s been a long and difficult journey. It hasn’t been traditionally ‘fun’ or exciting. But I love it. And in this world, it’s something that felt like a need.
